Brainworks Promotes Healthy Lifestyle and Helps Underprivileged Myanmar Children : Written By Micheal Gluszek

One hundred and fourteen Brainworks management members, teachers, students, and their families took part in the 2nd edition of Yoma Yangon International Marathon. Brainworks was the second largest team in the race and the largest team from an educational institution.

Long before sunrise, on a cool Sunday morning of 19th January 2014, Brainworks team members started gathering at Thuwanna National Stadium. Exceptional excitement was in the air. Weeks of devoted trainings were to be verified very soon. All the runners, be they 21 km Challenge runners or 5 km Fun runners, were thrilled with the opportunity to race not only each other, but almost 3000 other contestants from all around the world.

It wasn’t the only thrill, though. The main reason to run and the ultimate goal was clear to Brainworks team members from the very beginning. It was all about charity, about supporting disadvantaged Myanmar children. As the organizers announced, all the marathon registration fees are to be donated to three organizations: YCDC Non Profit Child Care Center for Low Income Citizens, ThukhaYeikMyong Humanitarian Centre, and Mon Ywa Orphanage. All of the above are committed to education and healthcare, matters Brainworks values beyond measure.

‘We will certainly see you next year. Brainworks aim to be the largest team in the marathon. We want to engage even more employees, students, as well as their families, in healthy lifestyle and the habit of helping those in need!’ said RenataGluszek, a half marathon finisher who received the 2nd Team Award on behalf of all Brainworks runners.

Let’s have best friends for our lives!

Hello everyone!!!!!

Do you want to have the best friends for your life? Last Friday, our students made best friends with Vegetables. On Friday afternoon, our chefs came to the school and introduced us with the best friends for our lives. The students were ready to go the hall.

When all the students were seated, the chef, U Thein Zaw, and his team explained about tomatoes, lady fingers @ Okra, watermelons, carrots, cucumbers and celery.

After his talk, he showed us the small lovely things made by vegetables. The chefs showed us how to make rose with tomatoes. The students were very excited and watched enthusiastically.

Then the chef let some students make roses with tomatoes. It was a wonderful magic moment that 3 and 4 years old children are doing on their own as soon as the chefs’ demonstration had done. Moreover the rest of the students were clapping, encouraging them and they were psyched for waiting to see who finished first.

Later, the chef asked the students about the benefit of eating vegetables. Everybody raised their hands to answer chef’s questions. Students could answer correctly.

Chefs gave the handmade vegetables baskets, flowers and vases, rabbits, birds, flowers, microphones and lanterns.

At the end, students ate warm and sweet rice jelly juice. At home time, they brought the handmade vegetables to their home happily and I was sure that they were going to share what they had seen and learned to their parents.

  •         Has cleaning properties that removes accumulated waste and toxins from our body

Why is Physical Education important for children?

Nowadays, the different ages of people are spending several hours by watching television, playing computer games, chatting on the internet and studying the lessons. These causes are rating on their health scale to drop.

Academic development enhances Intellectual skill of the children.   By emphasizing on the development of intellectual, we have to emphasize the children Physical, Social, Emotional, Leadership and Spiritual skills of the children. So, we decide to make many precious goals for the future leaders.

As we all know, people have difficulties to start at any new work or skill. But the key to learning any new skill is practice. You get better at a skill by repeating its step. This is how you learn life skills, too. We want our students to be eager to learn new things. Most of the people think that to learn PE lessons is early for Preschool students as they are so young and they can hurt easily by playing it.

On the other hands, by playing these effective physical activities, students can distinguish right from wrong, learn to share, give priority others first, build friendship and cooperation with others, cultivate health habits, obey the rules and love Myanmar games. We also mention it as Our School’s Philosophy.

 

Physical Education is one of our best co- curriculum activities in our school. Physical Education teacher teaches many games, activities and also Myanmar Traditional games. They all are always excited to play Myanmar games and love those. The benefits of playing PE games are very effective for different ages of people. Through P.E, students are learning any skills for their life.

Why do we celebrate Sports Day at BRAINWORKS TOTAL school in every year?

You may think your child can get scholarship in Top-ten Universities around the world as s/he is outstanding only in his/her studies. The demands of those Universities are more than you expected. Therefore, your child needs to be skillful not only in academic area, but also in other areas like sports and games.

As the chief goal of Brainworks Total schools is to bring all-round development for the students, we introduce the fundamentals of sports to our students starting from their Pre-school lives. We want our students to achieve not only intellectual development but also physical development. Our Pre-school students can get an opportunity to do the physical exercises such as Wushu and dance every week.

When our students are in Primary and Secondary level, they have a chance to choose their favourite sports. Then, they are systematically trained to be skillful in their favourite sports by worldwide professional trainers.

For pre-school students, we hold Sports Day to get practice in sports and games as well. In Sports Day, students participate in various kinds of sports and games enthusiastically with the cooperation of parents and teachers.

As a result, students come to realize the value of cooperation and team spirit. Regardless of any future goals or prospects, there is no doubt to say that playing sports brings an enjoyable and memorable experience to children and parents.

A fabulous Educational Excursion

The day was filled with strong rain fall early in the morning. Parents were very excited to send their kids to school. Students were also very anxious to go to National Ethnics Village on that day. Teachers busily made alternate plans in the event of a cancellation so there would be an outing of some kind as planned. The office was so busy with phone calls due to the heavy rain. Would the trip be postponed? Luckily, the rain stopped at 12noon and all plans was carried out with systematic arrangement. 3 buses with all Primary students went to the National Village and explored the village about 2.5 hrs. Then all came back to school around 4:00pm. The trip was very enjoyable and unforgettable with very pleasant weather.

We are from Primary 4 and this is our amazing group right in front of Bamar House. The Bamar House was part of our educational scavenger hunt and we had to ask questions of the people hosting the house to learn more about different ethnic groups in Myanmar.

We asked lots of questions and discovered lots of interesting facts about our country and its many ethnic groups. Did you know that the most well-known landmark in Kayin State is the Mt. Zwegabin? Or that Rakhine State hosts the most beautiful unspoilt beaches? What do you think the main product of Mon State is? Do you know? Well then, you should ask your son or daughter, because certainly they have learned that it is rubber!

We enjoyed all the different places that we saw, but we didn’t  like taking so much time to put our shoes on and off and none of us found the crocodiles. We were disappointed, but maybe it is safer that way.

Did you know that we had walking exercise in the village to get one place to another? In the end, we visited 5 houses and took a group photo of Primary (2).

We, Primary (3), believe that we are the happiest group among others. Red team leads in the trip to get an outstanding smiling face from our class teacher.

What Literature Means to Me

I am delighted to be Patron of the Irrawaddy Literary Festival. The success of the inaugural Festival, in February 2013, demonstrated the importance of this unique literary endeavour, which I hope will become an annual event.

I look forward to taking part personally in the next Festival in 2014. The Festival will again provide a spotlight for some of the best of Burmese writing and bring to our attention some of the best of international authors. It is an exciting exchange which can only enhance our literary landscape.

I am truly thrilled to share with you the exciting news that one of our own teachers, Tr. Brandilyn has been one of two winners in October’s Monument Books Essay Competition. This Competition holds as its grand prize a place at the Second Annual Irrawaddy Literature Festival in Mandalay (2014). I was at the first Annual Irrawaddy Literature Festival at Inya Lake Hotel earlier this year. It was a great pleasure to listen to Aung San Suu Kyi discuss the importance of literature in her life. I was especially touched by her support for mobile libraries to bring literature and books to the farthest village. It’s the kind of project that requires a lot of heart and dedication.

The Essay topic of October asked contributors to discuss the importance of literature in their lives. In reading Brandilyn’s essay I was able to deeply understand how very enriched our writing and reading programs in the English Department are by having her on our staff.

The competition is open to essays in both Myanmar and English, and open to writers of all ages. Instructions are available on the Facebook pages of both Monument Books and the Irrawaddy Literature Festival.

What Literature Means to Me

As a child, some of my first memories stem from the story time my mother and I shared before she put me to sleep at night. It wasn’t until later that I truly understood the Frederick Douglas quote she used to always say to me.  Once you learn to read, you are forever free.

Literature frees and empowers me in so many ways. It provides me with endless knowledge so I may continually learn and grow as a person. After first experiencing the joys of reading, I found power that I realized could never be taken away. I make the decision to constantly educate myself through the gifts of literature and literacy and the impacts affect me daily. I learn about what is happening in the world around me through newspapers, biographies, articles and endless arrays of books. Without these things, I will be lost. Without these things, I wouldn’t have been able to find or know myself, nor others. Through literature, I learn to value the struggles, failures and victories of everyday people and those well known. When reading these stories, I am affirmed that I am not alone. I can find inspiration, motivation, gratitude and strength. Compassion deepens when I humanize and relate in the words of others. The heroes that make me strive to better myself and make a difference in the world.

Literature means emotion. A roller-coaster that takes me speeding around sharp twists and turns. Sometimes it a joyous and fascinatingly spirited ride. Other times it is heart wrenching, unpredictable, astonishing and frightening. reality in the purest form. It is the legacy we leave behind not just as authors and storytellers, but as a collective group whose epic societal failures and accomplishments are recorded for all to see. These are our histories that can be erased no matter how tragic or grand, and are timelines of mortal actions that are perpetually archived through words.To me, literature is yin and yang. While some mornings I m left pessimistic after reading the news, I can quickly restore my positivism by seeking out beautiful stories. The wonderful stories don’t usually sell newspapers;nonetheless, they are still there.Literature is the natural duality that keeps me informed and enriched, no matter how good or bad.

Literature is escape from reality in the healthiest way possible. Reading fiction is like time traveling because I can instantly delve into a novel from the 19th Century and dream about a time when language was so eloquent and romantic.When I read AnnaKarenina I remember thinking, I dont want this story to end because I was so consumed by the precise imagery that Tolstoy created in his pages. That story changed my life because I was so enthralled and exhilarated by the language. Literature is our journey into the past and allows us to keep great traditions and works of art alive in the present. It helps us understand where we come from, how we evolved, guides us towards the future, and adds meaning to our often chaotic, fantastically tremendous lives.

More than anything, I have literature to thank for teaching me how to express myself to the world. If it wasn’t for literature, I would be capable of writing this essay to articulate what it means to me. The more I read, the better I am at finding my inner voice. the voice that erupts when I draw my solitudinous thoughts onto paper. I know it wouldn’t be possible to write from the heart without the collaboration of voices that guide my penned expressions.   From this, I believe that I too, can leave a legacy that states, I was here and had something to say.

Why do we need fire drills?

To ensure the safety of the people in the building when it is on fire, we have rehearsed the procedures and are aware of what to do at TOTAL Learning Academy It is also a legal requirement.

The goal of fire drills is to have a good “habit” formed and the children know what the signal is. Have you ever done a fire drill with a group of kids, when it has been unplanned and they have never heard the alarm before? IT WILL BE COMPLETE CHAOS! We do fire drills several times so that children know exactly what to do and they have confidence in their ability.

The drills need to be practiced at various times of the day and using different escape routes. In case of an emergency it is important to get out of the building in the quickest route. Children will be saved by practicing the drills.

Getty Kyaw Myo Myo is one of our Youth Leaders who values his Education and always wants to be the best in his studies. His leadership and teamwork started when he was in Primary 5. He chose to be a leader of his classmates and with his choreography they won the first prize on our Charity carnival day.

He was selected as a Youth Leader in Students Empowerment’s Camp 2011. In the last year Thadingyut Function he was one of the Main Character (Aryan from India) in our “Legend of Myanmar” and performed in front of a huge crowd. He values Myanmar Culture and he is proud of his Myanmar Heritage.

Moreover, he was a valuable member of the seating team and took care of seating arrangements and stage performances at the X mas Function and Annual Carnival Days.

He volunteered for our Yakhine Trip to handover the school in Minchanug village from 26th to 31st December 2011 holidays. There he played full out with young children of Myaybone, Taungyi Inn and villages nearby. He served children there whole heartedly

2nd Annual Championship Spelling Bee at Total Brainworks Group of Schools!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Students, Teachers and Parents,

Welcome to our 2nd Annual Championship Spelling Bee at Total Brainworks Group of Schools! We are very proud of our student spellers and their accomplishments.

First a bit of history about the Bee. That word itself comes from an American custom. With a different meaning from our usual buzzing understanding of it. Here, also a noun, meaning a “get-together” that waits for the work of the verb in front of it, example: a husking bee, a quilting bee, an apple bee. You might then sit in a circle, with others, husking corn, or with that same group of friends or neighbors, quilt and/or sew, or core apples and make apple pies. For our purposes we come together at this bee to do spelling, to spell.

The first documented contest was in 1825. It would be a century later that the first official National Spelling Bee took place. Sponsored by a newspaper, the finals were held in America’s capital city, Washington D.C., with nine finalists. This contest was won by Frank Neuhauserat the tender age of eleven and his winning word wasgladiolus. A beautiful word which any wordsmith worth their salt knows is a flower, from the iris family, that has sword shaped leaves, from Latin -gladius for sword. From that welcoming word thus began the ritual of the annual spelling bee.

Fun Facts: The official dictionary of the Scripps National Spelling Bee is Webster New International Dictionary which contains about 473,000 words at present for the students to potentially have to spell. In the history of the Scripps National Spelling Bee the most common word used in the competition is “connoisseur. From 1943 to 1945 there was no National Spelling Bee due to World War II. Winning words have included: Laodicean, luge, therapy, croissant, milieu, lyceum, kamikaze, antediluvian, chiaroscurist, logorrhea, Purim, and knack. Eleven of the fifteen bee winners since 1999 have been Americans of Indian descent. There has only been one non-American winner, and that was a Jamaican contestant.

Words are the brimming, combusting, necessary little engines of language. They give life to our writing, our poetry, our jokes and conversation, our dialogs written and recited. They are its heartbeat and blood enlivened that ochre ink coursing through our transmissions. Language is alive, it grows and shrinks. It sloughs off old words, or changes their meanings to better suit the times. We have engineered a list of words here that hail from all languages: brand new and ancient, east and west north and south, we have words from Latin, Greek, Hindi, French and Old English.

The students who are here, along with their parents too, have taken up the challenge to learn language. They are brave, fearless even. As teacher Stephanie, our Bee Master put it well: “This event teaches students much more than the spelling of exotic words. These youngsters develop strong study habits. They learn to set and achieve long-term goals. Through multiple eliminating and non-eliminating rounds, they have learned to be graceful and to be sportsmanlike, whether they win or lose. Most importantly, they acquire a deep sense of achievement and pride in their accomplishment. Without the active participation and achievement of students and parents this event would not be, would not become the event it has become, so we thank you, we applaud you.

The quest to pin down language, trace word roots, find meaning, refine meaning, is as old as all language itself. This has been and is the mark and task of scholar from all ages and those to come. Increasing your word usage, the act of searching out words and defining them, then knowing and using them properly, is a pursuit not just for schooling, but for educational enlightenment itself. Betterment. I’ll close this short history with a plea for us to gather and join in our own spelling bee. So that we may grow to know more. Enjoy your search, your defining, and your ability to learn. This one is for word power.
